Round 4 of the Border karting club championship was held under sunny conditions on the 13th of June 2015 at the Formula K section of the Historic East London Grand Prix Circuit. The Weather was a true blessing after rain and inclement weather had been forecast during the week. The event saw many of the usual local Border and Algoa Kart Club drivers entered with the exception of a few key players with various reasons. The pit lane was still full though despite the absent drivers as some new blood turned up on the day, most notably in the clubman’s C class and it’s always healthy to see growth in the sport.
In the Cadet Class Kaylim Padayache (Nate’s Car Sales) started where he left off from round 3 of the championship with another 2 fine victories on the day, but he didn’t take the clean sweep as newcomer to the class Dylan Stevens to victory in the final heat. This was enough though for Padayache to take 1st place overall for the Day ahead of Championship Leader Jordan van der Merwe (Mag Lab KME Racing) who finished tied on points for 2nd overall with Stevens. Cayden Randall Picked up solid points to take 4th overall for the day. As we have now reached the halfway point in the championship the standings are as close as ever with just 7 points between van der Merwe and Padayache for 1st and 2nd positions.
The 60cc junior Class saw Sebastian Smith (C&G Bodyworks) take full advantage of the fact that Kenzo Barnard (Mag Lab KME Racing) did not enter as he took the overall Victory for the day and with it the championship lead. Matthew Rowe (RPM) took 2nds and a 1st place on the day to finish 2nd overall and Port Elizabeth’s Kiesha Potgieter (Energy) drove consistently well to once again finish on the podium in 3rd overall.
Jono Stephens made a brilliant debut in the clubman’s C class as he managed to take 3 victories from 3 heats to finish 1st overall. Melindre Marais drove consistently well to narrowly to finish 2nd and Beat her sister Cherne who also did an impeccable job on the day to finish in 3rd place. Britney van der Merwe continued the trend of new drivers taking the top positions in the class as she finished tied on points with Kevin Vosloo who drove well and overcame some technical difficulties to claim 4th place. Damian Thompson took 6th overall on his 1st outing ahead of Kevin Nightingale in 7th and Cuan Flusk who had a nightmare of a day after he bent an axle which left him unable to compete in heats 2 and 3 and finished in 8th overall.
Clubman’s B Saw Jared De Kock (Big Joe Racing) dominate on the day as he took 3 wins from 3 starts to take the overall victory. De Kock did however breakout of the allowed lap time of 36.000 seconds and in so doing will move up to class A from the next event. Kyle Hart made a welcome return to karting with 3 2nd place finishes on the day putting him in 2nd overall. Ashton Nell drove well to finish with 2 3rds and a 4th to finish 3rd overall ahead of Jeff Hall in 4th overall.
Geoff Stephens (Mag Lab KME Racing) took 3 victories from 3 starts once again to take the overall victory. His life was made easy though as Cameron Kelly (Monster Energy) and Jethro Schwartz (Black Betty Motorsport) got into a fierce battle which allowed Stephens to easily run off into the distance. Kelly would finish 2nd and Schwartz would finish 3rd overall. Brent Strydom (C&G Bodyworks) was 4th overall.
The Super Rok class was an extremely tight knitted affair, this was evident in the fact that 3 drivers were tied for 1st place on the day. Richard Clarke (RPM), Craig Borges (Big Joe Racing) and Shaun Vallance (Mag Lab KME Racing) all ended up on 94 points. The Podium Eventually being decided on fastest lap time meant that Shaun Vallance took home 1st place followed by Richard Clarke and Craig Borges in 3rd. Shaun Gradwell (Mag Lab KME Racing) finished 4th with Grant Godfrey (RPM) in 5th. Bradley Rowe (RPM) took 6th overall ahead of Tristan Wantenaar who made the move from clubman’s C to Super Rok in 7th overall.
The Impressive DD2 Gearbox class saw Shaun Gradwell (Mag Lab KME Racing) in a dominant mood as he took 3 victories from 3 heats on the day to take 1st overall. In 2nd Place was a tie between Wesley Jones who returned from overseas and Championship Leader Geoff Stephens (Mag Lab KME Racing). Shaun Vallance (Mag Lab KME Racing) took the honors of 4th overall, with Andre Botha (Mag Lab KME Racing) and Craig Borges (Big Joe Racing) in 5th and 6th places respectively.
